Ancestors are an American heavy music band from Los Angeles, formed in 2006. Their sound sits at the intersection of psychedelic doom, sludge, progressive rock and experimental heaviness, often stretching into long-form compositions that prioritise atmosphere, repetition and gradual development over conventional structure.
Their music tends to unfold in layers rather than direct impact, shifting between dense, distorted passages and expansive, almost meditative sections. It’s heavy, but rarely in a hurry to prove it.
Emerging from the LA underground scene, Ancestors initially drew from doom and sludge foundations before steadily expanding into more psychedelic and progressive territory. Over time, their approach became more exploratory, incorporating ambient passages, extended instrumental development, and a broader dynamic range.
Rather than relying on straightforward heaviness, the band built their identity around atmosphere and progression, allowing tracks to evolve slowly and shift shape as they unfold.
The last known line-up of Ancestors before their split in 2019 consisted of Justin Maranga on guitars and vocals (2006–2019), Jason Watkins on organ, piano and vocals (2006–2019), and Daniel Pouliot on drums (2011–2019). Together, they formed a tightly focused trio responsible for the band’s later evolution.
Each release expands their sound further into layered composition, shifting dynamics, and extended atmospheric structure while maintaining a heavy core.
