Alestorm are a Scottish heavy metal band formed in Perth in 2004. Characterised by their distinctive pirate theme, the band was originally founded as Battleheart, a studio project created by vocalist and keyboardist Christopher Bowes and guitarist Gavin Harper, before adopting the name Alestorm ahead of the release of their debut album.
Combining power metal, folk metal and traditional heavy metal with pirate-themed lyrics, infectious melodies and a tongue-in-cheek sense of humour, Alestorm have built a unique identity within the metal world. Their music blends soaring choruses, energetic riffs, accordion and keyboards with tales of pirates, seafaring adventures, drinking songs and mythical legends.
Despite several personnel changes throughout their career, Alestorm have remained true to the sound and humour that first established their reputation. Today, Christopher Bowes is the band's only remaining founding member, continuing to lead the group while preserving its unmistakable pirate metal identity.
In 2006, Christopher Bowes and Gavin Harper recorded two demos that were well received within the local metal scene. Originally intended as a standard power metal band, the success of the song "Heavy Metal Pirates" convinced the band to permanently adopt a pirate theme and incorporate folk metal elements into their music. After assembling a full live lineup and replacing drummer Doug Swierczek with Ian Wilson, the band submitted the demos to Napalm Records in 2007 and quickly secured a recording contract.
Adopting the name Alestorm shortly afterwards, the band introduced audiences to an energetic blend of folk melodies and heavy metal, helping establish pirate metal as a recognised subgenre and earning an international following.
Throughout their career, Alestorm have continued to expand their sound while remaining faithful to the humorous pirate themes that define the band. Their combination of memorable songwriting, virtuosic musicianship and theatrical live performances has made them festival favourites across the world, while their willingness to embrace comedy without compromising musical quality has set them apart within the folk metal scene.
