Graves At Sea are an American Doom / sludge metal band from San Francisco, California, known for their crushing, ultra-heavy sound and bleak, atmospheric compositions. Blending the slow, suffocating weight of doom with the raw aggression of sludge and elements of death metal, they have carved a unique place in the extreme music underground.
Graves At Sea was formed in 2002 by Nick Phit, Nathan Misterek, Roger Williams, and Steve Klatz. The band kickstarted their career by self-releasing a demo titled Documents of Grief in 2003. Following this, they toured extensively and caught the attention of Greg Anderson of Southern Lord Records and the drone metal band Sunn O))), whose label released the band's single Cirrhosis b/w Atavist Arise in 2004. In 2007, Misterek moved to Oakland and Phit relocated to Portland, Oregon.
In 2008, the band performed two final shows with Chiyo Nukaga of Noothgrush on drums and Miguel Veliz of Sourvein and The Roller on bass before breaking up. Four years later, in 2012, Graves At Sea reunited with Nukaga on drums and Greg Wilkinson of Brainoil on bass, though both later left due to time constraints. The band resumed performing, touring Europe in 2013, followed by West Coast U.S. performances.
The final lineup before splitting in 2022 consisted of Nick Phit on guitars (2002–2008, 2012–2022), Nathan Misterek on vocals (2002–2008, 2012–2022), Jeff McGarrity on bass guitar (2013–2022), and Bryan Sours on drums (2013–2022).
