Repulsion are an American grindcore band from Flint, Michigan, formed in 1984. Widely regarded as one of the earliest and most important pioneers of grindcore, Repulsion helped shape the extreme end of underground metal with their raw, chaotic and fiercely fast sound.
Originally operating under the name Genocide, Repulsion became a foundational influence on both grindcore and brutal death metal, especially through their legendary underground recordings that circulated widely before their official debut.
Repulsion’s sound is defined by ultra-fast tempos, distorted guitar tones, primitive recording quality, and abrupt song structures. Their music blends early death metal aggression with punk-influenced grindcore speed and chaos.
The band’s raw aesthetic and lo-fi brutality became a blueprint for countless grindcore and extreme metal acts that followed.
Slaughter of the Innocent (1986) – seminal demo combining grindcore speed, death metal riffs, and raw underground production.
Horrified (1989) – the band’s only studio album and a cornerstone of grindcore, originally circulated in the underground before its official release; widely regarded as one of the most influential extreme metal recordings of all time.
Repulsion are regarded as one of the cornerstones in extreme music and one of the innovaters of grindcore, influencing bands such as Napalm Death , Cannibal Corpse and Terrorizer. Their raw approach bridged the gap between early death metal and extreme hardcore punk.
