Castle Rat are a medieval fantasy doom metal band from Brooklyn, New York. They lean hard into the lore, but it is not just cosplay. Under the swords and sorcery visuals you have proper doom riffs, big heavy metal choruses, and a dark cinematic feel that makes the whole thing land.
Riley Pinkerton leads the charge as The Rat Queen on vocals and rhythm guitar, and the rest of the band match that theatrical energy without losing the groove. The songs move like chapters. Slow, stomping parts that hang in the air, then the tempo kicks and the melody bites back. It is epic, but it still feels gritty and human, like it was built in a rehearsal room not a boardroom.
If you are new to them, start with the debut album Into the Realm and work forward. The artwork and the world building are half the fun, and the music more than holds its own. It is the sort of band you can follow properly, not just stream once and forget.
