Cherubs are a noise rock trio from Austin, Texas, originally formed in 1991 by Kevin Whitley (former drummer of Ed Hall), bassist Owen McMahon, and drummer Brent Prager. Known for their abrasive guitar tone, heavy distortion, and punishing rhythms, Cherubs became a staple of the 1990s American underground noise rock scene, delivering music that sits somewhere between chaotic hardcore, sludgy riffs, and raw, experimental intensity.
The band quickly gained a reputation for ferocious live shows and recordings that embraced distortion and sheer force rather than polish. The current line-up features Pete Shore on bass, who replaced Owen McMahon, alongside Whitley and Prager, maintaining the group’s characteristic heaviness and intensity.
Cherubs’ songs combine bursts of hardcore aggression with slower, sludge-inspired sections, producing a listening experience that is as unpredictable as it is physical. Thick, grinding guitar tones and pounding drums dominate, placing the band firmly in the lineage of confrontational underground rock alongside The Jesus Lizard, Melvins, and Unsane.
In November 2018, Cherubs signed with the metal-focused label Relapse Records for future releases, signalling a new chapter in the band’s long-running career.
