The Cult are an English rock band formed in Bradford in 1983, built around Ian Astbury’s voice and a sound that sits comfortably between post punk grit and big, riff driven rock. They have always had that rare mix of atmosphere and muscle, so the songs work just as well in a small room as they do with the volume right up.
Before the name settled, there was a whole early chapter. Ian’s previous band was Southern Death Cult, which shifted into Death Cult. By January 1984 the name became The Cult, but the earlier material never disappeared. In recent years they have even toured under the Death Cult banner to dig into those early songs again, which tells you how much that era still matters to the band and the fans.
