Quicksand are an American post-hardcore band from New York City, formed in 1990 by vocalist/guitarist Walter Schreifels (Youth of Today, Rival Schools) following his departure from Gorilla Biscuits. Renowned for their innovative fusion of hardcore punk, alternative rock, and post-hardcore, the band became one of the most influential acts of the 1990s underground scene.
Featuring members with roots in the New York hardcore community, Quicksand developed a distinctive sound built around heavy, melodic guitar work, intricate rhythms, and introspective songwriting. Their influence has extended far beyond hardcore, inspiring countless post-hardcore, alternative metal, and emo bands.
Quicksand's sound combines the intensity of hardcore with angular riffs, dynamic song structures, melodic vocals, and thoughtful lyricism. Rather than relying solely on aggression, the band emphasise atmosphere, groove, and emotional depth, creating a style that helped redefine post-hardcore during the 1990s.
Following an extended hiatus after the late 1990s, the band reunited to widespread acclaim, continuing to evolve their sound while remaining true to the musical identity that made them so influential.
Slip (1993) – landmark debut studio album introducing the band's signature blend of post-hardcore intensity, alternative rock melody, and intricate musicianship, featuring enduring favourites such as "Dine Alone" and "Fazer".
Manic Compression (1995) – acclaimed second album expanding the band's sound through heavier grooves, richer melodies, and increasingly sophisticated songwriting, cementing their reputation as pioneers of post-hardcore.
Interiors (2017) – long-awaited third studio album marking the band's return after more than two decades, successfully blending their classic sound with a mature and contemporary approach.
Distant Populations (2021) – fourth studio album showcasing refined songwriting, textured guitar work, and the dynamic interplay that has defined Quicksand throughout their career.
Quicksand are widely recognised as one of the defining bands in the evolution of post-hardcore. Their innovative songwriting, distinctive musicianship, and enduring influence have shaped generations of artists across hardcore, alternative rock, emo, and post-metal, while Walter Schreifels remains one of the genre's most respected songwriters.
