Formed in Bristol in 2015, Sugar Horse have steadily carved out their own corner of the UK heavy landscape. Blending post-metal weight with shoegaze textures and alternative rock melody, the band specialise in contrast — atmosphere one moment, crushing density the next.
They are not interested in heaviness for its own sake. Dynamics, space and emotional weight are just as central to their sound as distortion.
Their debut album, The Live Long After (2021, Small Pond Records), earned praise for merging post-metal aggression with introspective textures. It established Sugar Horse as a band capable of balancing raw force with thoughtful composition — expansive without drifting, heavy without becoming blunt.
The follow-up, The Grand Scheme of Things (2024), broadened that scope further. Recorded largely live in an abandoned Bristol church, the album confronts grief and mortality, inspired by frontman Ash Tubb’s personal loss. The setting seeps into the sound — spacious, resonant and unflinchingly honest.
Earlier releases demonstrated their experimental streak. The Waterloo Teeth (2022) EP and Truth or Consequences, New Mexico (2023) highlight the band’s collaborative spirit, featuring guest appearances from members of IDLES, Conjurer, Pupil Slicer and Biffy Clyro. Rather than feeling like novelty additions, these collaborations expand the band’s sonic reach while retaining their identity.
Across albums and EPs alike, Sugar Horse favour immersion over immediacy. The songs unfold, build and land with intent.
