Mr. Bungle are an American experimental rock band from Eureka, California, formed in 1985. Renowned for their fearless approach to genre-blending, the band have combined elements of heavy metal, funk, disco, avant-garde jazz, ska, hardcore punk, and progressive rock to create one of the most unpredictable and influential catalogues in modern music.
Originally founded by vocalist Mike Patton (Faith No More, Fantômas, Tomahawk) guitarist Trey Spruance, and bassist Trevor Dunn (Fantômas, Tomahawk) while they were still in high school, Mr. Bungle developed a cult following through a series of widely circulated demo tapes before signing to Warner Bros. Records in the early 1990s. Their willingness to embrace musical experimentation and theatrical performances has earned them enduring acclaim as pioneers of experimental heavy music.
Mr. Bungle's sound is virtually impossible to categorise, shifting effortlessly between heavy metal, jazz fusion, funk, ska, surf rock, death metal, carnival music, progressive rock, and avant-garde composition. Their unpredictable songwriting, exceptional musicianship, and surreal sense of humour have made every release a unique listening experience.
Following a lengthy hiatus, the band reunited in 2019, adding legendary musicians Scott Ian (Anthrax) and Dave Lombardo (Slayer) to the line-up, focused on revisiting their thrash metal roots, introducing their music to a new generation while celebrating their earliest material.
