As the World Dies are a British death metal band from Birmingham, England, formed in 2018 by guitarist Scott Fairfax and drummer Chris McGrath. Combining old-school death metal with progressive and atmospheric elements, the band deliver a heavy, uncompromising sound built around crushing riffs, forceful vocals, shifting tempos and dark lyrical themes.
Fairfax's background with Memoriam, Cerebral Fix and Benediction has helped place As the World Dies firmly within the UK's longstanding death metal tradition, while the band have developed their own approach through atmospheric passages, unpredictable tempo changes and a modern production style. Their music draws on the weight and aggression of classic British and European death metal without simply reproducing its influences.
As the World Dies were originally formed by Scott Fairfax on guitars and Chris McGrath on drums, bringing together musicians with experience across the British metal scene. The early lineup was completed by vocalist Jay Price, guitarist Ash Cottrill and bassist Bill Richmond, establishing the five-piece that would go on to record the band's debut album.
Their debut, Agonist, was released in 2022 through Transcending Obscurity Records and featured guest contributions from figures including Karl Willetts, David Ingram and Kam Lee. The album established the band's approach to combining direct death-metal aggression with atmospheric sections, changes in pace and a strong emphasis on heavy, riff-driven songwriting.
In 2025, As the World Dies returned with Nebula through Reaper Entertainment, expanding on the foundations established by Agonist with another collection of heavy, dark and atmospheric death metal. Further lineup changes followed, with Sonja Rosenlund Ahl joining as vocalist in 2026. The current lineup is completed by founding members Chris McGrath on drums and Scott Fairfax on guitars, alongside Bill Richmond on bass, bringing the band into a new chapter while retaining the heavy foundations established since their formation.
