Before The Dawn are a Finnish melodic death metal and gothic metal band formed in 1999 by Tuomas Saukkonen. The sound sits right in the sweet spot between heavy, driving riffs and colder, more melancholic melody. It is melodic death metal with mood, and it has that Finnish knack for turning bleak into addictive.
The band had a long first run, then stepped away for a while. They came back in 2021 and the return has not been a nostalgia lap. Stormbringers in 2023 sounds like a band picking up pace, not trying to recreate a moment. Since then they have kept moving, with the Archaic Flame EP in 2024 and the full length Cold Flare Eternal in 2025.
If you want a quick entry point, Stormbringers is an easy place to start. If you are digging into the earlier years, albums like Deadlight and Rise of the Phoenix show the darker, more gothic side of the band alongside the bigger melodeath hooks.
