As It Is are a British-American rock band based in Brighton, England, combining pop punk, emo and alternative rock with catchy melodies, energetic guitar work and emotionally direct songwriting. Founded by Patrick Thomas "Patty" Walters in 2012, the band have built a strong following through their relatable lyrics, energetic live performances and ability to balance upbeat punk influences with darker and more introspective themes.
Their music has evolved considerably throughout their career, moving from the melodic pop-punk of their early releases towards more ambitious and emotionally complex material. Across their catalogue, themes of relationships, mental health, identity and personal struggles have remained central, giving their songs an honest quality that has resonated with fans of modern punk and alternative rock.
As It Is began when Patty Walters advertised online for musicians to join a pop-punk band. Andrew Westhead and Patrick Foley responded to the advertisement and joined alongside Benjamin Biss, whom Walters knew from university. The band's name was taken from a lyric by American straight edge hardcore band Have Heart, reflecting the hardcore influences that helped shape their early musical direction.
They spent their first couple of years playing local shows. In early 2014, bassist Alistair Testo joined the lineup, and later that year the band released their fourth EP, This Mind of Mine. Shortly after its release, they embarked on their first tours across the UK and Europe. The strong response from audiences on these tours helped raise the band's profile and ultimately led to their signing with Fearless Records. Their debut album, Never Happy, Ever After, followed in 2015 and introduced their energetic blend of pop punk and emo to a much wider audience.
The band continued to broaden their sound with okay. in 2017 and The Great Depression in 2018, the latter taking a darker and more ambitious approach to songwriting. Following lineup changes and a period of uncertainty, I Went to Hell and Back arrived in 2022, combining the band's familiar melodic energy with post-hardcore and electronic influences. After a period away from the spotlight, As It Is returned with new music and a renewed lineup, releasing their self-titled album As It Is in July 2026 and beginning another chapter in their evolution.
