Minutemen were an American punk rock band from San Pedro, California, formed in 1980. One of the most innovative and influential bands to emerge from the American underground, they blended hardcore punk with funk, jazz, post-punk, and experimental rock, creating a distinctive sound that challenged the conventions of punk music.
Consisting of guitarist D. Boon, bassist Mike Watt, and drummer George Hurley, Minutemen became synonymous with the independent spirit of the 1980s underground. Their close association with SST Records, the pioneering independent label founded by Greg Ginn of Black Flag, helped establish them as one of the defining bands of the era while reinforcing the DIY ethos that shaped American punk. The band's remarkable career came to an abrupt end in 1985 following the tragic death of D. Boon in a road accident, bringing one of underground music's most creative partnerships to a close.
