Aphex Twin is the best-known alias of Richard D. James, a British electronic artist raised in Cornwall. His music can move from warm ambient to sharp-edged techno and acid, with plenty of left turns along the way.
Often linked with IDM and experimental electronic music, James is known for pushing sound design and rhythm into strange places while still creating melodies and hooks that remain instantly memorable. His work can be playful, unsettling, beautiful or completely chaotic, often shifting between contrasting styles within the same release.
Richard D. James began experimenting with electronic music at an early age, developing an interest in synthesizers, computers and sound manipulation that would become central to his work. Early releases under names including Aphex Twin, Polygon Window and AFX established his reputation within the growing British electronic underground, with the Selected Ambient Works 85-92 album becoming an influential release in the development of ambient techno and experimental electronic music.
Throughout the 1990s, James continually expanded his sound, moving between atmospheric compositions, abrasive acid techno, breakbeats and increasingly unconventional electronic production. Releases such as Selected Ambient Works Volume II, Richard D. James Album and Drukqs demonstrated his ability to combine intricate programming and unusual sound design with melodies that could be surprisingly accessible. His distinctive visual identity, particularly through collaborations with designer Chris Cunningham, also became an important part of the Aphex Twin aesthetic.
After a period of relative quiet, James returned with Syro in 2014, earning the Grammy Award for Best Dance/Electronic Album and introducing his music to another generation of listeners. Further releases including the Collapse EP (2018) and Blackbox Life Recorder 21f / In a Room7 F760 (2023) have continued his reputation for experimentation, while his extensive catalogue remains a major influence on electronic musicians across ambient, techno, IDM and experimental music.
