Astrosaur are a Norwegian instrumental power trio from Oslo, formed in 2014. Built around guitarist Eirik Kråkenes, bassist Steinar Glas and drummer Jonatan Eikum, the band combine post-metal, progressive rock, stoner rock and jazz influences to create expansive instrumental music driven by heavy riffs, atmospheric textures and intricate rhythms.
Without a vocalist, Astrosaur allow the instruments to carry the narrative, using soaring guitars, powerful bass and dynamic drumming to create music that moves between crushing heaviness and spacious, psychedelic passages. Their compositions are designed as immersive journeys, with the trio's stripped-back format giving each member considerable freedom to explore their instruments.
Astrosaur formed around a shared interest in exploring what could be achieved with an entirely instrumental format. The trio's members studied at the Conservatory of Music in Kristiansand and brought experience from other musical projects, with Kråkenes also performing as a touring and session musician with acts including Leprous and Ihsahn.
Their debut album, Fade In // Space Out, arrived in 2017 through Bad Vibes Records, developing a sound that combined progressive, stoner and jazz rock with heavy, spacious guitar work. The album's compositions were originally developed for live performance, with the songs connected to create a continuous musical journey through different moods and styles.
Astrosaur joined Pelagic Records for their second album, Obscuroscope, in 2019, expanding their sound with elements of post-metal, jazz, math rock and black metal. Their third album, Portals, followed in 2022, pushing further into expansive heavy psychedelia and instrumental rock. The band have also toured extensively across Europe, including performances supporting Leprous and Ihsahn, while continuing to build a reputation for powerful and immersive live performances.
