The All-American Rejects – Alternative Rock, Pop Punk and Emo

The All-American Rejects are an American rock band formed in Stillwater, Oklahoma in 1999. Known for blending alternative rock, pop punk, emo and power pop, the band became one of the defining acts of the 2000s with their infectious melodies, heartfelt lyrics and radio-friendly anthems.

The band was founded by vocalist and bassist Tyson Ritter and guitarist Nick Wheeler, who remain the group's only founding members and principal songwriters. Since guitarist Mike Kennerty and drummer Chris Gaylor joined in 2002, the quartet has remained unchanged, giving The All-American Rejects one of the most stable lineups in modern alternative rock. Today, Tyson Ritter continues as lead vocalist and bassist, Nick Wheeler as guitarist and multi-instrumentalist, Mike Kennerty on guitar and backing vocals, and Chris Gaylor on drums and backing vocals.

Combining catchy hooks with energetic guitar-driven rock, The All-American Rejects built a distinctive sound that balances upbeat pop punk with memorable melodies and alternative rock influences. Their music has remained a favourite among fans of 2000s rock, producing numerous chart-topping singles and enduring fan favourites.

From Oklahoma to Global Success

Nick Wheeler and Tyson Ritter formed the band while they were still in high school in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Ritter initially joined as the bassist before he and Wheeler decided to pursue the project full time. In 2000, they recorded their first demo, simply titled The All-American Rejects, featuring Nick Wheeler on drums, Tyson Ritter on vocals and bass, and Jesse Tabish on guitar and vocals.

The early demo attracted the attention of Doghouse Records, which released the band's self-titled debut album in 2002. Their breakthrough followed quickly as relentless touring and growing radio exposure introduced them to a much wider audience.

The success of subsequent albums cemented their reputation as one of the biggest alternative rock and pop punk bands of the decade. Their catalogue features a succession of memorable singles that showcase Tyson Ritter's distinctive vocals, Nick Wheeler's melodic songwriting and their ability to combine emotionally driven lyrics with instantly recognisable choruses.

More than two decades after their formation, the band continue to perform worldwide, with their music remaining a defining soundtrack for fans of 2000s guitar-driven rock. Reflecting on the band's origins, guitarist Mike Kennerty has said the name The All-American Rejects was chosen simply because "it was a random name that sounded cool", adding that the band eventually grew into it over the years.
