A Tribe Called Quest – Jazz Rap, Alternative Hip-Hop and Native Tongues

A Tribe Called Quest are an American hip-hop group from Queens, New York, known for blending jazz, funk, soul and other influences with relaxed rhythms, inventive sampling and thoughtful lyricism. Formed by Q-Tip, Phife Dawg, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, and Jarobi White, the group became one of the defining acts of the alternative hip-hop movement and helped establish a stronger connection between jazz and rap.

Their music combined playful wordplay with socially aware themes and an approach to production that drew heavily from jazz, rock, soul and other styles. Songs such as "Can I Kick It?", "Bonita Applebum", "Check the Rhime", and "Scenario" became central to their catalogue, while albums including The Low End Theory and Midnight Marauders helped shape the sound of 1990s hip-hop.

From Queens to Hip-Hop History

The group began among high school friends in Queens, initially performing under the name Quest before becoming A Tribe Called Quest. Q-Tip and Phife Dawg had known each other from childhood, while Jarobi and Ali Shaheed Muhammad became part of the developing group during their school years. Their connection with De La Soul and Jungle Brothers also placed them within the emerging Native Tongues collective, alongside artists including Queen Latifah and Black Sheep.

A Tribe Called Quest signed with Jive Records and released their debut album, People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm, in 1990. Tracks including "Can I Kick It?" and "Bonita Applebum" introduced their laid-back approach, while Q-Tip's production and the group's eclectic sampling helped establish their sound. Jarobi left the group in 1991, while the remaining members continued with The Low End Theory, an album that brought jazz and hip-hop together through its bass-heavy production, intricate rhythms and contributions from jazz musicians including Ron Carter.

The group continued with Midnight Marauders in 1993, followed by Beats, Rhymes and Life in 1996 and The Love Movement in 1998. After a lengthy period away, A Tribe Called Quest returned with We Got It From Here... Thank You 4 Your Service in 2016, their first album in 18 years. The record featured Phife Dawg, who died earlier that year, and Jarobi returned to the group for the project. A Tribe Called Quest were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2024, recognising their lasting contribution to hip-hop and wider music culture.
