Cough are a Doom metal band from Richmond, Virginia, formed in 2005. Known for their dense, oppressive sound and slow-burning heaviness, Cough blend traditional doom metal with thick layers of sludge and psychedelic atmosphere. Their music is built around towering riffs, distorted bass, and vocals that feel dragged through amplifiers at the end of a long night.
Emerging from Richmond’s fertile underground metal scene, the band quickly gained attention for their punishing live performances and uncompromising approach to metal music. Their recordings capture a raw, immersive quality that reflects both classic doom influences and the darker, heavier side of modern sludge metal.
Cough’s sound draws from the weight and pacing of traditional doom while embracing the abrasive textures of sludge and underground metal. Their music has often been associated with acts such as Electric Wizard, Sleep, and Eyehategod, combining hypnotic repetition with thick, suffocating guitar tones.
The band was founded by guitarist and vocalist Parker Chandler, who now handles bass and harsh vocals, alongside guitarist David Cisco, providing both guitar and clean vocals. They are joined by Joseph Arcaro on drums and Brandon Marcey on guitar. Together, these four members form the current line-up, combining decades of experience to maintain Cough’s crushing, psychedelic doom style while delivering their live performances and T-shirt–worthy imagery.
