Norway’s Årabrot operate where noise-rock, art-rock and post-punk intersect: serrated tones, ritual pulse, and literate, often transgressive themes delivered with clarity rather than clutter. Founded in 2001 by guitarist/vocalist Kjetil Nernes in Haugesund and now anchored as a creative duo with Karin Park, the band have evolved from underground abrasion to widescreen “True Norwegian Art Rock” without losing nerve. Their story also includes Nernes’ 2014 cancer diagnosis and recovery, after which the music gained an even more purposeful edge.
Early releases on Fysisk Format set the tone—caustic guitar figures, baritone drama, and lyrics steeped in philosophy and the bible’s darker corners—before a decisive shift toward grander, song-first writing across the late 2010s. A key move came with Pelagic Records, who issued Who Do You Love (2018) and Of Darkness & Light (2023): albums that pushed the band’s chiaroscuro aesthetic—hymnal melodies against sandpaper textures—while keeping arrangements lean. Much of this era was created at Djura Missionshus, the deconsecrated church in rural Sweden that serves as the band’s studio and home.
In 2025 Årabrot followed with Rite of Dionysus, tracked during the same broader sessions and continuing the duo’s fascination with ecstatic ritual and repetition—another confident chapter that lands between liturgy and rock theatre.
Who Do You Love (2018) – a sharp rebirth on Pelagic: noirish hooks, swaggering rhythm and lyrical bite.
Of Darkness & Light (2023) – tensile, melodic and immediate; recorded entirely at the Djura church.
Rite of Dionysus (2025) – hypnotic, ritualistic grooves that extend the current palette.
Årabrot’s modern catalogue is closely tied to Pelagic Records, whose EU issues and artist support have helped frame the band’s post-2018 phase and reintroduce them to a broader post-metal/post-rock audience while preserving their idiosyncrasy. Expect Pelagic pressings with thoughtful presentation across formats.
