Formed in Perth, Western Australia in 2004, Tangled Thoughts of Leaving have developed a reputation for intricate, immersive compositions that sit between progressive rock, post-metal and experimental heaviness. Their music is expansive and detailed, favouring atmosphere, texture and dynamic build over immediacy.
Often described as instrumental, the band subtly incorporate vocals and samples as textural elements rather than focal points, allowing the arrangements themselves to carry the narrative.
Aaron Pollard’s piano and synth work provide much of the band’s cinematic depth, layered with carefully placed samples that expand the sonic palette. Luke Pollard’s bass anchors the shifting structures with weight and restraint, while Paul Briggs’ guitar lines move between angular tension and sweeping ambience. Gracie Smith’s drumming ties it together — rhythmically intricate when needed, restrained when the space calls for it.
The result is music that unfolds deliberately. Technical, certainly — but never at the expense of atmosphere.
