Christian Mistress are a Heavy metal band from Olympia, Washington, formed in 2008. Drawing from Doom-influenced heavy metal of the late ’70s and early ’80s, Christian Mistress combine soaring vocals, galloping riffs, and dark, occult-tinged themes, creating a sound that pays homage to the new wave of British heavy metal while retaining a modern intensity.
Prior to the formation of Christian Mistress, vocalist Christine Davis fronted the thrash metal band Buried Blood. Guitarists Ryan and Oscar played in two of Olympia’s premier metal bands, and after both of their previous groups disbanded, they decided to write and play music together. The band’s 2009 demo, recorded for only $500, helped establish their signature sound and introduced them to the underground metal community.
The current line-up features Christine Davis (vocals, 2008–2016, 2022–present), Jonny Wulf (bass, 2008–2016, 2022–present), Reuben W. Storey (drums, 2008–2013, 2014–2016, 2022–present), and Tim Diedrich (guitars, 2014–2016, 2022–present). Together, they blend intricate guitar harmonies, pounding rhythm sections, and commanding vocals to create a retro-inspired yet fresh heavy metal experience.
Christian Mistress’ musical style has been associated with the new wave of British heavy metal (NWOBHM). According to Pitchfork Media writer Grayson Currin, the band’s second album, Possession, combines influences from “proto-thrash, grandiose classic rock, and smoky doom.” The band has been compared to British acts such as Diamond Head and early Iron Maiden.
Christine Davis’ vocals have been described as a “combination of the incantatory power of Patti Smith, the raw force of Wendy O. Williams, and the howls of Nicole Lee of ’80s Chicago thrashers Znowhite.” On Possession, her singing drew comparisons to Diamanda Galás, Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top, Michael Gira of Swans, Mariska Veres of Shocking Blue, and Roky Erickson of The 13th Floor Elevators.
