God Macabre are a cult Death metal band from Stockholm, Sweden, originally formed in the early 1990s and closely tied to the explosive Swedish death metal movement. Emerging from the same scene that produced genre-defining acts, the band quickly built a reputation for their raw, uncompromising sound rooted in buzzsaw guitar tones and bleak atmospheres.
Originally active under earlier names, Jonas Stålhammar joined the band in the spring of 1990 and took over most of the songwriting (music). They released a demo in September 1990 titled Consumed by Darkness. Shortly thereafter, the band changed their name to God Macabre.
In 1992, the band split up after Johansson and Nilsson had left in 1991 and no suitable replacements could be found. Members Boder and Sjöberg went on to form Snake Machine, which later evolved into Space Probe Taurus.
Despite the early split, God Macabre released their only full-length album, The Winterlong…, which became a cult classic. The album was re-issued in 2002 by Relapse Records with the original demo as bonus tracks. In March 2008, the Relapse version was also released on vinyl for the first time by Swedish label Bloodharvest Records. A second re-release occurred in May 2014 through Relapse Records, including the bonus track Life's Verge, an old song from 1991 recorded in 2013.
Their sound captures the essence of the Stockholm scene—ferocious yet atmospheric, drawing listeners into a grim and immersive sonic landscape. Despite a relatively short initial run, God Macabre left a lasting impact on the Swedish death metal scene and remains highly influential.
