The Amity Affliction are an Australian post-hardcore and metalcore band formed in Gympie, Queensland, in 2003. Known for their emotionally charged songwriting, heavy guitar work, melodic choruses and powerful vocals, the band have developed a distinctive sound that combines the intensity of metalcore with the atmosphere and vulnerability of post-hardcore.
Their music frequently explores themes of personal struggles, loss and emotional turmoil, giving their songs a deeply personal quality that has connected with audiences around the world. Across their career, The Amity Affliction have continued to develop their sound while maintaining the emotional intensity that has become central to their identity.
The Amity Affliction were founded by school friends Ahren Stringer and Troy Brady. The band was named in memory of a close friend who died in a car accident at 17, with “Amity” representing their friendship and “Affliction” reflecting their grief. After playing local shows, they released a three-track demo in 2004, with Joel Birch joining as vocalist later that year.
Their self-titled debut EP followed in 2005, leading to an east coast Australian tour and several early lineup changes. In 2006, keyboardist Trad Nathan joined, while Stringer moved from bass to guitar. The band later released the High Hopes EP, named after the house featured in The Amityville Horror.
After developing their sound through these early releases and extensive touring, The Amity Affliction began gaining wider recognition with Severed Ties (2008) and Youngbloods (2010), with their breakthrough coming via Chasing Ghosts (2012), which reached number one on the Australian ARIA Albums Chart and established them internationally. Subsequent releases including Let the Ocean Take Me (2014), This Could Be Heartbreak (2016), Misery (2018), Everyone Loves You... Once You Leave Them (2020) and Not Without My Ghosts (2023) saw the band continue to evolve through experimentation with melody, electronic elements and heavier songwriting while maintaining the emotional honesty and intensity that have defined their music.
On 14 February 2025, the band announced that founding member Ahren Stringer had been fired and would no longer tour or record with The Amity Affliction, citing the breakdown of their relationship and certain behaviours directed towards the band and those close to them. The band confirmed they would continue without Stringer. With his departure, none of the original members remained in the lineup, leaving Joel Birch as the longest-standing current member.
The band entered a new chapter with House of Cards (2026), their ninth studio album and first to feature bassist and clean vocalist Jonathan Reeves, who joined the band full-time following his touring role. Released on 24 April 2026 through Pure Noise Records, the album continues The Amity Affliction's evolution while retaining the emotional and heavy characteristics of their established sound.
