Don Caballero are an American math rock band from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, celebrated for their intricate rhythms, precise instrumentation, and unconventional song structures. Since forming in the early 1990s, they’ve become a defining force in instrumental rock, influencing generations of musicians drawn to complex, cerebral compositions.
Formed in 1991 by Damon Che on drums, Don Caballero originally included Ian Williams and Mike Banfield on guitars and Pat Morris on bass. Early recordings and live shows combined aggressive energy with tightly structured arrangements, quickly setting them apart in the underground scene. Line-up changes followed, but Che remained the driving force, maintaining the band’s signature intricate rhythms and propulsive riffs.
In 2003, Che reformed Don Caballero with members of Pittsburgh’s Creta Bourzia: Jeff Ellsworth and Gene Doyle on guitars, and Jason Jouver on bass. Banfield and Morris were invited but declined. The new line-up signed to Relapse Records in 2005 and released World Class Listening Problem in 2006, touring that year and the next, including shows in the UK and Japan.
The band has not released new music since 2009, though three archival albums have appeared. Che indicated in 2014 that Don Caballero still existed part-time, with potential limited touring or vinyl singles, but by 2017 he described the band in the past tense, noting they stopped after a final show in Spain.
In 2021, an official YouTube channel appeared, featuring Che performing drum covers and promoting a successful GoFundMe to digitise the band’s master tapes, with hints that new material may eventually emerge. In 2024, Che released an album with El Ten Eleven bassist Kristian Dunn under the name Yesness, titled See You At The Solipsist Convention.
