Lustmord — Vinyl, CDs & Audio

Lustmord is the principal outlet of Welsh-born, LA-based sound artist Brian Williams, widely credited as a foundational figure in dark ambient. Active since 1980, he evolved from early industrial roots (including time with SPK) into cavernous, bass-rich works built from field recordings and carefully sculpted reverberant spaces—music intended to feel physical, not merely “ambient”.

A brief history & sound

Key milestones include the late-’80s/’90s run that defined his low-frequency, cinema-scale aesthetic, and The Word As Power (2013), a notable pivot that placed long, ritual vocal lines within Lustmord’s subterranean architecture. It underlined his interest in presence and scale over genre orthodoxy.

Recent years show the catalogue’s continued breadth: the studio full-length Much Unseen Is Also Here (15 March 2024) returns to monolithic drones and chasm-deep harmonics; it’s a late-career record that foregrounds detail and negative space.

The Pelagic Records connection

Lustmord’s relationship with Pelagic Records has yielded some of his most visible contemporary releases. Pelagic curated The Others [Lustmord Deconstructed] (2021/22), enlisting artists from across heavy and experimental music to reinterpret material from his [ O T H E R ] era—an index of his influence as much as a companion piece. Pelagic also issued Much Unseen Is Also Here in 2024, reinforcing that partnership.
