The Ocean (also known as The Ocean Collective) are a German progressive post metal band formed in Berlin in 2000. They are widely regarded as one of the most ambitious and conceptually driven bands in modern progressive metal, known for their expansive sound and scientifically inspired themes.
Led by guitarist/composer Robin Staps, The Ocean operate as a collective of musicians, evolving their lineup over time while maintaining a cohesive artistic vision.
The Ocean’s sound is defined by dynamic contrasts between crushing heaviness and atmospheric passages, blending post-metal textures with progressive structures. The Ocean continue to release through Pelagic, keeping the creative and logistical ecosystem tightly linked between band and label.
