Biohazard are an American hardcore band formed in 1987 in Brooklyn, New York. They are one of the earliest bands to fuse hardcore punk and groove metal with elements of hip hop, creating one of the defining crossover sounds of the early 1990s. Their music captures the intensity of urban life, combining raw energy with socially conscious lyrics and street-level realism.
Built on heavy riffs, shouted vocals, and rap-influenced delivery, Biohazard helped shape the sound of crossover metal alongside the rise of alternative and hardcore scenes.
Biohazard were formed by Evan Seinfeld, Billy Graziadei, and Bobby Hambel, later joined by drummer Danny Schuler. Emerging from Brooklyn’s hardcore scene, the band built their identity around the realities of city life, addressing themes such as survival, violence, and unity.
As their sound developed, they absorbed hip hop influences and heavier groove elements, blending hardcore punk intensity with metal structures and urban lyrical themes. Their breakthrough albums Urban Discipline and State of the World Address established them firmly within the crossover metal movement, bringing wider attention to their hybrid sound and cementing their place in early 1990s heavy music.
Despite line-up changes over time, the band retained their core identity and reputation as pioneers of crossover metal, maintaining a consistent focus on street-level realism and high-impact aggression.
