Down are an American heavy metal supergroup formed in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1991. Drawing together members from some of the most influential names in Sludge, Doom and Groove metal, the band developed a sound rooted in slow, heavy riffing and a distinctly Southern sense of groove.
Rather than chasing speed or technical excess, Down focus on weight, feel and atmosphere — creating music that leans as much on space and mood as it does on sheer heaviness.
The classic Down lineup features Phil Anselmo (vocals), Pepper Keenan (guitar), Kirk Windstein (guitar), Pat Bruders (bass) and Jimmy Bower (drums). With backgrounds spanning bands such as Pantera, Corrosion of Conformity and Crowbar, the group brings together a wide range of influences while maintaining a cohesive identity.
Their approach centres on thick, blues-tinged riffs, steady groove and a deliberately unpolished sound. There’s a clear Doom influence running through their material, but it’s balanced by a looser, Southern rock feel that gives the music its character.
