Killing Joke are an English Post-Punk band formed in Notting Hill, London, in 1978 by Jaz Coleman (vocals, keyboards), Paul Ferguson (drums), Geordie Walker (guitar) and Youth (bass). Known for their distinctive fusion of Post-Punk, Industrial Metal, Alternative Rock and heavy rhythmic intensity, the band developed a sound that is aggressive, atmospheric and highly influential. Their music combines driving basslines, jagged guitar work and a ritualistic sense of rhythm.
Emerging from the late 1970s post-punk scene, Killing Joke quickly established a heavier, more industrial-influenced approach that went on to shape elements of both metal and alternative music.
Killing Joke built their identity around repetition, tension and intensity rather than traditional rock structures. Their music often features pounding rhythms, distorted guitars and hypnotic basslines, creating a sound that feels both mechanical and tribal.
Jaz Coleman’s vocal delivery and lyrical themes frequently explore dystopian, political and existential ideas, reinforcing the band’s bleak and confrontational atmosphere. Over time, their sound evolved to incorporate heavier guitar tones and Industrial Metal textures while maintaining its core rhythmic foundation.
