Prong are an American band formed in 1986 in New York City, widely regarded as one of the pioneering forces in Industrial Metal. Blending elements of Thrash Metal, Hardcore Punk, and Groove Metal, their sound is tight, aggressive, and forward-thinking, built on precision riffs, mechanical rhythms, and a stripped-back intensity that helped shape modern heavy music.
Across their career, Prong have maintained a distinct identity rooted in urban grit and sonic experimentation, influencing countless bands across industrial, groove, and alternative metal.
Formed in the mid-1980s New York hardcore scene, Prong were originally driven by vocalist and guitarist Tommy Victor, alongside bassist Mike Kirkland and drummer Ted Parsons. Emerging from the city’s underground club circuit, the band quickly developed a heavier, more mechanical edge that set them apart from their hardcore roots.
Their breakthrough came with Beg to Differ (1990), which established Prong’s distinctive fusion of industrial metal, groove metal, thrash metal, and hardcore. Albums such as Prove You Wrong and Cleansing further refined this approach, combining sharp, rhythmic riffing, industrial repetition, and groove-driven heaviness with a precise, stripped-down songwriting style.
Despite numerous line-up changes over the years, Tommy Victor has remained Prong’s sole constant member throughout the band’s history. This continuity has helped preserve Prong’s distinctive identity and creative vision across every era.
This innovative blend helped Prong become one of the most influential underground bands of their era. Their impact can be heard across industrial, groove, alternative, and modern metal, with a legacy built on innovation, consistency, and a sound that remains uniquely their own.
