Soulfly are an American heavy metal band formed in 1997 in Phoenix, Arizona, by vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter Max Cavalera following his departure from Sepultura. Blending Groove Metal, Thrash Metal, Nu Metal, and tribal influences, Soulfly forged a distinctive sound that combines crushing riffs, percussive intensity, and a global musical perspective.
Known for their relentless energy and spiritually charged songwriting, Soulfly have remained a powerful force in modern metal, seamlessly merging aggression, experimentation, and cultural influences into a sound that is unmistakably their own.
Following his exit from Sepultura, Max Cavalera founded Soulfly as a deeply personal creative rebirth, channeling themes of resilience, spirituality, and renewal. From the outset, the band embraced a broader sonic palette, incorporating world music, tribal rhythms, and experimental textures alongside groove-driven heaviness.
Their self-titled debut, Soulfly (1998), introduced this bold new direction, while subsequent releases such as Primitive, Prophecy, and Dark Ages expanded their sound even further. Across the years, Soulfly have explored everything from nu metal and hardcore-infused aggression to thrash-driven intensity and extreme metal ferocity.
Despite numerous line-up changes throughout their career, Max Cavalera has remained Soulfly's driving force, ensuring a consistent artistic vision while allowing the band to evolve with each release. He is currently joined by his son, Zyon Cavalera, who has handled drums and percussion since 2012, and guitarist Mike DeLeon, who joined the band in 2023.
