Architects – Metalcore Precision, Atmospheric Heaviness and Modern British Hardcore

Architects are a British Metalcore band formed in Brighton, England in 2004 by drummer Dan Searle and his twin brother, guitarist Tom Searle. Before becoming Architects, the project originally operated under the name Counting the Days, alongside original vocalist Matt Johnson, guitarist Tim Hillier-Brook and bassist Tim Lucas.

In 2005, the band released a demo containing their first recorded material under the Architects name, though it was only made available to family and close friends. From these early beginnings, Architects would go on to become one of the defining names in modern metalcore, known for combining technical aggression, atmospheric production and emotionally charged songwriting with socially and politically conscious themes.

Their sound blends crushing breakdowns, intricate guitar work and Post-Hardcore intensity with melodic textures and expansive production, helping push metalcore beyond its traditional boundaries while retaining a powerful emotional core.

From Chaotic Beginnings to Modern Metal Mainstays

Early releases such as Nightmares (2006) and Ruin (2007) established Architects within the UK hardcore and technical metal scenes, showcasing complex riffing and relentless energy. As the band evolved, albums like Hollow Crown (2009) and The Here and Now (2011) introduced stronger melodic elements and broader songwriting dynamics.

Their later work, particularly Lost Forever // Lost Together (2014), All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us (2016) and Holy Hell (2018), helped cement Architects as one of the most influential modern metal bands of their generation. These releases balanced devastating heaviness with emotionally resonant themes surrounding loss, environmental collapse and personal struggle.

Following the death of founding guitarist Tom Searle in 2016, the band continued in his memory, with Dan Searle remaining a central creative force. Architects have since continued to evolve, incorporating elements of Alternative metal, industrial textures and arena-scale production into later releases.
