Godflesh are a British Industrial Metal band formed in Birmingham in 1988 by Justin Broadrick and G. C. Green (Ben George Christian Green). Known for their stark, mechanical sound, the band combine heavy guitar work with drum machines, minimalist structures and a distinctly cold, repetitive atmosphere. Their approach strips metal back to its core elements, resulting in something both punishing and hypnotic.
Emerging from the late 1980s underground, Godflesh became a defining force in Industrial Metal, influencing a wide range of artists with their uncompromising, machine-driven style.
Formed in the industrial landscape of Birmingham, Godflesh developed a sound that reflects its environment — rigid, mechanical and deliberately unpolished. Built around programmed rhythms rather than a traditional drummer, their music emphasises repetition, weight and space over complexity or speed.
Guitar tones are dense and heavily distorted, often locked into looping patterns that reinforce the rhythmic backbone. The result is a sound that feels controlled and oppressive, balancing elements of Industrial Metal with extreme heaviness and experimental atmosphere.
Rather than following conventional song structures, Godflesh focus on texture and atmosphere, creating tracks that evolve gradually through repetition and subtle variation.
