Explore physical music from Cardiacs, one of the most distinctive, unpredictable and fiercely individual bands to emerge from the British underground. Led by songwriter, guitarist and vocalist Tim Smith alongside his brother Jim Smith, Cardiacs built a devoted following through music that cheerfully ignored conventional boundaries.
Formed in the late 1970s and initially known as Cardiac Arrest, the band combined progressive rock, punk, psychedelia, pop, post-punk and theatrical eccentricity into a sound that remains remarkably difficult to categorise. Sudden changes of tempo, intricate arrangements, enormous melodies and a generous helping of controlled chaos all became central to the Cardiacs identity.
Early cassette releases such as The Obvious Identity, Toy World and The Seaside introduced the band’s restless approach to composition. Cardiacs later developed that sound across albums including A Little Man and a House and the Whole World Window, On Land and in the Sea, Heaven Born and Ever Bright, Sing to God and Guns.
The 1988 single Is This the Life brought the band a rare brush with the mainstream, but Cardiacs remained committed to their own peculiar path. Their complex yet deeply melodic music went on to influence generations of musicians while attracting one of the most loyal cult audiences in British rock.
Originally released in 1989, On Land and in the Sea captures the classic Cardiacs line-up at its most colourful and ambitious. The album moves rapidly between frantic art rock, psychedelic pop, progressive complexity and moments of genuine beauty, with tracks including Baby Heart Dirt, The Duck and Roger the Horse and The Leader of the Starry Skies.
Remastered at Abbey Road, the album has been made available again on physical formats, giving established followers and newly initiated admirers another opportunity to experience one of Cardiacs’ defining releases.
Following Tim Smith’s illness in 2008, Cardiacs entered a lengthy period of inactivity. His death in 2020 prompted tributes from musicians and fans across the alternative music world, underlining the enormous influence his work had achieved without ever becoming remotely conventional.
The long-awaited album LSD, begun under Tim’s direction and later completed by his bandmates, was finally released in 2025. Cardiacs subsequently returned to live performance, allowing the music and the wonderfully strange world surrounding it to continue for a new chapter.
