Anthrax are an American thrash metal band formed in New York City in 1981. They are widely regarded as one of the “Big Four” of thrash metal alongside Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer, helping define the genre’s speed, attitude, and crossover appeal.
Known for their energetic performances and sense of humour, Anthrax also played a key role in bridging metal with hardcore punk and later rap influences.
Anthrax’s sound is defined by fast, aggressive guitar work, shouted vocals, and an infectious sense of rhythm. Unlike many of their contemporaries, they often incorporated punk rock energy and a more playful lyrical tone.
The band became pioneers of the thrash metal “crossover” style and helped expand the genre’s audience in the 1980s and 1990s.
Fistful of Metal (1984) – debut album introducing their raw early thrash sound.
Spreading the Disease (1985) – breakthrough release featuring vocalist Joey Belladonna and a more refined style.
Among the Living (1987) – landmark thrash album featuring iconic tracks like “Caught in a Mosh” and “Indians.”
State of Euphoria (1988) – continuation of their classic era with strong touring support.
Persistence of Time (1990) – darker, more serious album showcasing musical maturity.
Worship Music (2011) – comeback album widely praised for recapturing their classic sound.
For All Kings (2016) – modern-era release blending classic thrash with contemporary production.
Anthrax are considered one of the most important thrash metal bands of all time, particularly for their role in expanding the genre’s stylistic boundaries through crossover experimentation.
