Devourment are an American death metal band from Dallas, Texas, widely recognised as one of the defining names in slam death metal. Known for their ultra-heavy riffs, guttural vocals, and deliberately slow, crushing grooves, the band have played a significant role in shaping the sound of the genre.
Since forming in 1995, Devourment have remained a key presence in the Texas metal scene, pushing death metal into even heavier territory. Their early material helped establish the blueprint for slam, combining downtuned guitars, groove-laden breakdowns, and deeply guttural vocal delivery.
In their initial run, the band released the demo Impaled and their debut album Molesting the Decapitated before disbanding following the jailing of vocalist Ruben Rosas. During this period, there was a brief continuation of the band which led to the original release of the compilation 1.3.8.
After Rosas’ release, the band reformed briefly before a more permanent return in 2005. Since then, Devourment have remained active, issuing reworked versions of 1.3.8., additional releases, and a steady run of full-length albums including Butcher the Weak, Unleash the Carnivore, Conceived in Sewage, and Obscene Majesty.
Their debut remains a landmark release within brutal death metal, and their later work continues to refine that same heavy, groove-driven approach without straying far from their roots. Subtlety is still in short supply, but that has never really been the aim.
Devourment has experienced various line-up changes throughout its history, with members contributing across all roles while maintaining the band’s defining weight and intensity. The current line-up comprises Ruben Rosas – vocals; Brad Fincher – drums; Dave Spencer – bass; and Marvin Ruiz – guitars, combining long-standing members with more recent additions.
