My Dying Bride are a British Doom Metal band formed in 1990 in Bradford, England. Emerging from the early UK extreme metal scene, they became one of the defining acts in death-doom, blending slow, mournful riffs with gothic atmosphere and bleak, introspective lyricism.
Their music is built around sorrowful, drawn-out melodies, shifting between harsh and clean vocals, and an atmosphere that prioritises emotional weight over speed or technical display. While their sound has developed subtly over time, the core identity has remained consistently dark and deliberate.
The band was formed by guitarist Andrew Craighan and vocalist Aaron Stainthorpe, with early contributions from guitarist Calvin Robertshaw, bassist Adrian Jackson, and drummer Rick Miah. From the beginning, they stood apart within the doom scene by incorporating violin into their arrangements, giving their music an additional layer of melancholy and texture.
Early releases quickly positioned them at the forefront of the Death/Doom movement during the 1990s, a period when the genre was still taking shape. While many peers later experimented with more commercial or melodic directions, My Dying Bride largely remained committed to slow tempos, sombre atmosphere, and emotionally heavy songwriting.
These releases trace the band’s journey from early death-doom foundations into a more refined, atmospheric form of doom metal. Across their catalogue, there is a strong emphasis on mood, space, and emotional weight rather than stylistic change or reinvention.
