Thorns are a Norwegian black metal band formed in 1989, widely regarded as part of the first wave of Norway’s now-legendary black metal movement. Emerging from the same early scene that reshaped extreme metal in the early 1990s, Thorns built a reputation not through a vast catalogue, but through influence and innovation.
Their early demos — Grymyrk and Trøndertun — became highly influential within underground circles, helping to define the cold, riff-driven template that many later bands would adopt.
At the centre of Thorns is Snorre Ruch (often credited as Blackthorn), whose distinctive guitar approach played a significant role in shaping the icy, dissonant riff style associated with Norwegian black metal’s formative years. The band’s early recordings were stark, abrasive and structurally unconventional, favouring atmosphere and repetition over polish.
Despite forming in 1989, Thorns have released just one full-length album:

Rather than flood the scene with releases, Thorns maintained an almost mythic presence — spoken about as much for their early demos and influence as for their official output. In black metal terms, scarcity has rarely diminished reputation.
