Formed in 2006 in Blacktown, Sydney, Thy Art Is Murder emerged as one of the most uncompising forces in modern deathcore. Combining technical death metal precision with crushing breakdowns and socially charged themes, the band quickly gained international traction and helped elevate the Australian extreme metal scene to global prominence.
Their sound is direct, rhythm-heavy and unapologetically aggressive — built for impact rather than subtlety.
Before their full-length dominance, the band laid foundations with early EP releases:
This Hole Isn’t Deep Enough for the Twelve of You (2007) – raw, chaotic and firmly rooted in early deathcore aggression
Infinite Death (2008) – a pivotal release that sharpened their technicality and underground reputation
These early recordings introduced the band’s intense sonic identity and set the stage for what followed.
Their debut album The Adversary (2010) marked a major step forward, but it was Hate (2012) that propelled them into the international spotlight — widely regarded as a landmark deathcore record. From there, the band continued to refine their sound with:
Holy War (2015) – politically charged and expansive
Dear Desolation (2017) – darker, tighter and production-focused
Human Target (2019) – modern, clinical and rhythm-driven
Thy Art Is Murder have experienced several line-up shifts over the years, particularly in the vocal position. Long-time frontman Chris “CJ” McMahon rejoined the band in 2015 after an earlier departure, fronting multiple albums including Holy War, Dear Desolation and Human Target.
However, around the release of Godlike (2023), the band underwent a significant change. CJ McMahon departed prior to the album’s release, with the band re-recording vocals and introducing a new era moving forward. This marked a notable transition in the band’s history, but musically Godlike maintained the relentless weight and technical sharpness fans expect.
Throughout these changes, guitarist Sean Delander has remained a long-standing member and central creative force, alongside guitarist Andy Marsh and drummer Jesse Beahler, ensuring continuity in songwriting and direction despite shifts in personnel.
