The Exploited are a Scottish punk band formed in Edinburgh in 1979 by guitarist Terry Buchan, later fronted by his brother Wattie Buchan. Emerging from the second wave of British punk, the band became one of the most recognisable and influential names in UK hardcore, known for their aggressive sound, confrontational attitude, and unmistakable visual identity.

Throughout their career, The Exploited have remained one of punk's most enduring and controversial acts. Their music evolved from street punk and Oi! roots into increasingly hardcore and crossover-thrash-oriented territory, helping influence generations of punk and metal bands.

Street Punk, UK Hardcore, and Crossover Aggression

The Exploited’s sound combines street punk, hardcore punk, UK82, and later crossover thrash influences. Their songs are characterised by fast tempos, shouted gang choruses, aggressive riffing, and lyrics addressing war, social unrest, authority, and rebellion.

The band are especially associated with the UK82 movement, helping define the harsher and more aggressive direction taken by British punk in the early 1980s.
