Mountain were an influential American hard rock band formed in Long Island, New York, in 1969, widely regarded as pioneers of heavy blues-rock and early hard rock. Known for their crushing guitar tone, powerful vocals, and thunderous rhythm section, Mountain helped shape the sound that would influence generations of hard rock and heavy metal artists.
The original lineup featured the legendary Leslie West on vocals and guitar, Felix Pappalardi on bass and vocals, Steve Knight on keyboards, and drummer N. D. Smart, who was soon replaced by Corky Laing. Together, they created a sound that blended blues roots with sheer volume and intensity, setting Mountain apart during the late 1960s and early 1970s rock explosion.
Mountain rose to prominence with iconic releases such as Climbing! (1970), featuring the enduring rock classic “Mississippi Queen”, and Nantucket Sleighride (1971), which showcased their heavier, more expansive songwriting. Although the band initially disbanded in 1972, Mountain reunited on several occasions over the decades, continuing to perform and record until the passing of Leslie West in 2020, marking the end of an era.
