Gallows – British Hardcore Punk with Uncompromising Force

Gallows are an English hardcore punk band formed in Watford, Hertfordshire, in 2005. Known for their aggressive guitar work, furious vocals and confrontational lyrics, the band emerged as one of the most prominent acts in the British hardcore punk scene. Their music combines the raw intensity of hardcore with elements of post-hardcore, punk rock and, on some releases, metalcore.

Originally fronted by Frank Carter, Gallows built their reputation on volatile live performances and songs addressing violence, frustration and social discontent. Following Carter's departure in 2011, Wade MacNeil, formerly of Alexisonfire, took over as vocalist, bringing a new dynamic to the band's sound while retaining its abrasive energy and uncompromising approach.

From Watford Hardcore to Grey Britain

Gallows formed from the local punk scene, with the original lineup comprising Frank Carter on vocals, Steph Carter on guitar, Laurent Barnard on guitar, Stuart Gili-Ross on bass and Lee Barratt on drums. Their debut album, Orchestra of Wolves (2006), established their reputation through fast, aggressive hardcore punk and bleak depictions of British working-class life. After the album attracted wider attention, the band secured an international following and a major-label deal.

Their second album, Grey Britain (2009), expanded their intensity into a darker, more ambitious statement about social division, political disillusionment and life in contemporary Britain. Its dense arrangements and uncompromising lyrics cemented the band's reputation, making it one of the defining British hardcore punk releases of its era. In 2011, Frank Carter left the group and was replaced by Wade MacNeil, whose first release with Gallows was the Death Is Birth EP.

The self-titled album Gallows (2012) introduced MacNeil as the band's new frontman, followed by Desolation Sounds (2015), which incorporated more post-punk and gothic rock influences alongside their established aggression. After a period of reduced activity, the band returned for selected performances, including appearances in 2018 and 2019. Their catalogue continues to appeal to listeners drawn to intense British punk, socially charged lyrics and uncompromising hardcore.
