Black Flag are an American hardcore punk band from Hermosa Beach, California, formed in 1976 by guitarist Greg Ginn and vocalist Keith Morris (Circle Jerks). Widely regarded as one of the founders of hardcore punk, the band revolutionised underground music through their relentless touring, uncompromising sound, and pioneering DIY ethic, laying the foundations for countless punk, hardcore, and alternative bands that followed.
Throughout numerous line-up changes—including the influential tenures of vocalists Keith Morris, Ron Reyes, Dez Cadena, and Henry Rollins—Black Flag continually pushed the boundaries of hardcore punk. Equally significant was their association with SST Records, the legendary independent record label founded by Greg Ginn, which became one of the most important labels in American underground music and helped launch the careers of countless influential punk, hardcore, and alternative artists.
Black Flag's sound evolved from the blistering speed of early hardcore punk into increasingly experimental territory, incorporating heavy metal, sludge, jazz, and improvisational influences. Their uncompromising approach, intense live performances, and fiercely independent spirit redefined what an underground band could achieve without the support of major record labels.
Through both Black Flag and SST Records, the band helped establish the blueprint for independent touring, self-released records, and DIY culture that continues to influence underground music around the world.
