Black Flag are an American hardcore punk band formed in Hermosa Beach, California in 1976 by guitarist and primary songwriter Greg Ginn and vocalist Keith Morris (Circle Jerks). Widely regarded as one of the most influential bands in punk history, they helped pioneer hardcore punk through their aggressive sound, relentless touring ethic, and uncompromising independent spirit.
Across their career, Black Flag became synonymous with the development of the American hardcore movement, influencing generations of punk, sludge, grunge, noise rock, and alternative metal artists.
Black Flag’s sound combines fast and abrasive hardcore punk, heavy distorted riffs, chaotic energy, and later experimental and sludge-influenced songwriting. Their music frequently explores themes of alienation, frustration, personal struggle, anti-authoritarianism, mental instability, and social decay.
The band are especially recognised for their fiercely independent DIY approach and their willingness to push hardcore punk into darker, heavier, and more experimental territory.
Nervous Breakdown (1979) – legendary debut EP widely regarded as one of the foundational releases of American hardcore punk.
