The Mars Volta are an American progressive rock band formed in El Paso, Texas, in 2001 by vocalist Cedric Bixler-Zavala and guitarist Omar Rodríguez-López, following the break-up of influential post-hardcore band At the Drive-In. Renowned for their wildly inventive compositions, electrifying live performances and refusal to conform to conventional musical boundaries, The Mars Volta have become one of the most distinctive and adventurous bands in modern progressive rock.
Drawing inspiration from psychedelic rock, jazz fusion, Latin music, funk, experimental rock and post-hardcore, the band developed a sound that combines extraordinary musicianship with unpredictable arrangements and often surreal, conceptual storytelling. Their music moves effortlessly between intricate guitar passages, explosive rhythms, atmospheric interludes and the unmistakable high-register vocals of Bixler-Zavala.
Their debut EP, Tremulant (2002), offered an early glimpse of their ambitions, but it was their first full-length album, De-Loused in the Comatorium (2003), that established The Mars Volta as a major creative force. Produced by Rick Rubin, the ambitious concept album featured tracks including Inertiatic ESP and Roulette Dares (The Haunt Of), blending the intensity of their post-hardcore roots with sprawling progressive rock arrangements.
The follow-up, Frances the Mute (2005), pushed their experimental approach even further, incorporating lengthy compositions, extended instrumental passages and a more pronounced influence from Latin rhythms and jazz. The album became a commercial and critical success, reaching number four on the US Billboard 200 chart and cementing their reputation as a band entirely comfortable challenging their audience.
Subsequent albums Amputechture (2006), The Bedlam in Goliath (2008), Octahedron (2009) and Noctourniquet (2012) continued to explore different aspects of their increasingly expansive sound. Their 2008 track Wax Simulacra also earned the band a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance.
Following their split in 2013, The Mars Volta remained inactive for almost a decade while Bixler-Zavala and Rodríguez-López pursued other projects. The band made a long-awaited return in 2022 with their self-titled album, introducing a more restrained, melodic approach that incorporated elements of electronic music, pop and Latin influences. An acoustic reinterpretation of the record, Que Dios Te Maldiga Mi Corazon, followed in 2023.
In 2025, The Mars Volta released Lucro Sucio; Los Ojos del Vacío, another ambitious chapter in their constantly evolving catalogue. Featuring a continuous sequence of shorter, interconnected compositions, the album further demonstrated the creative partnership at the heart of the band.
Across more than two decades, The Mars Volta have remained impossible to categorise neatly. Their fusion of progressive rock, psychedelic experimentation and post-hardcore intensity has inspired a devoted following and established them as one of the most uncompromising and influential alternative rock acts of their generation.
