Beastie Boys were an American hip-hop group from New York City, formed in 1981 and best known for the core trio of Michael “Mike D” Diamond, Adam “MCA” Yauch and Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz. Beginning in the hardcore punk scene, they developed an unmistakable sound that combined rap, rock, funk and inventive sampling, helping bring alternative hip-hop to a much wider audience.
From the rebellious energy of Fight for Your Right and No Sleep Till Brooklyn to the sample-heavy production of Paul's Boutique and the explosive rock influences of Sabotage, the group continually challenged expectations. Their playful lyrics, adventurous arrangements and willingness to experiment made them one of the most influential acts in hip-hop, with a catalogue that reaches far beyond their early party anthems.
The group began in the New York hardcore punk scene before moving towards hip-hop with the release of Cooky Puss in 1983. Their debut album, Licensed to Ill, arrived in 1986 and became the first rap album to top the US Billboard 200, establishing them as international stars.
Rather than repeat their early formula, the Beastie Boys took a more experimental direction with Paul's Boutique (1989), an album celebrated for its dense sampling and creative production. They returned to playing instruments on Check Your Head (1992) and Ill Communication (1994), incorporating punk, funk and alternative rock into their evolving sound. Later releases, including Hello Nasty (1998) and To the 5 Boroughs (2004), continued to demonstrate their versatility.
Their final studio album, Hot Sauce Committee Part Two, was released in 2011. Following the death of Adam Yauch in 2012, Mike D and Ad-Rock did not continue as the Beastie Boys, and the group officially disbanded in 2014. Their influence remains evident across hip-hop, alternative music and sampling culture.
