Otay:Onii is an experimental electronic and avant-pop project led by multifaceted artist Lane Shi Otayonii. Originally from Haning, China, she moved to the US in her teens and is currently based in Berlin, Germany. Otay:Onii blends elements of hyperpop, industrial, ambient, and performance art into a highly abstract and immersive sonic identity.
The project is known for its boundary-pushing approach, combining music, visual art, and conceptual storytelling to create emotionally intense and often surreal experiences.
Otay:Onii’s sound is defined by fragmented structures, distorted vocals, and a fusion of harsh noise with delicate melodic passages. Their compositions frequently shift between chaos and clarity, creating a disorienting yet cohesive listening experience.
The project often incorporates theatrical and performance-based elements, expanding beyond traditional music formats into multimedia expression.
Nag (2018) – debut album introducing a raw and experimental blend of industrial textures, avant-pop structures, and emotionally charged vocal performance.
MíngMíng (2021) – abstract and emotionally layered release focusing on identity, perception, and digital fragmentation through highly experimental composition.
Dream Hacker (2023) – expanded conceptual work pushing further into structured experimental pop, balancing harsh electronic elements with melodic and atmospheric passages.
Otay:Onii is regarded as a distinctive voice within the experimental electronic and avant-pop landscape, pushing boundaries between sound art, performance, and digital-era expression.
Fans of artists such as Arca, SOPHIE, and FKA twigs are likely to appreciate Otay:Onii’s genre-defying and emotionally intense approach.
All Otay:Onii releases we carry are official physical formats only, focusing on vinyl and limited-edition releases sourced from authorised labels and distributors.
