alt-J (∆) are an English indie rock band formed in Leeds, West Yorkshire, in 2007. Known for their distinctive blend of alternative rock, indie, folk, electronic, and experimental influences, the band have developed a sound that is difficult to place within a single genre. Their music combines intricate arrangements, unusual rhythms, layered vocals, and atmospheric production to create an instantly recognisable style.
The group initially performed under the name Daljit Dhaliwal, after the BBC newsreader and television presenter they had grown up watching during the 1990s. They later changed their name to FILMS, but were forced to adopt another name because an American band called The Films already existed. The band eventually decided on ∆, the triangle-shaped symbol and capital Greek letter delta, which is used in mathematics to represent "change". On Mac computers, the symbol can be typed by pressing Alt + J, giving the band the name alt-J.
alt-J (∆) were formed when Gwilym "Gwil" Sainsbury (guitar/bass), Joe Newman (guitar/lead vocals), Gus Unger-Hamilton (keyboards/vocals), and Thom Sonny Green (drums) met at the University of Leeds in 2007. Unger-Hamilton studied English, while Sainsbury, Newman, and Green studied Fine Art. During their second year, Newman showed Sainsbury some of his songs and the pair began recording together using GarageBand in their student accommodation, with Sainsbury acting as producer.
The band's early sound was partly shaped by their student surroundings, where they had to keep noise to a minimum and had limited access to instruments. Green worked with a small drum kit, Unger-Hamilton used a basic keyboard, while Newman relied on an acoustic guitar, helping encourage the restrained, layered approach that would become part of alt-J's distinctive sound.
After developing their sound through live performances and early recordings, the band signed to Infectious Music and released their debut album, An Awesome Wave, in 2012. The album was widely praised for its originality and won the Mercury Prize, establishing alt-J as one of the UK's most exciting emerging alternative acts.
On 11 January 2014, the band announced that Gwil Sainsbury had decided to leave alt-J, with the group confirming that they remained friends. Cameron Knight subsequently became a supporting member for the band's live performances, helping the remaining members continue touring as a three-piece.
Their follow-up albums continued to expand their musical palette. This Is All Yours (2014) and Relaxer (2017) explored increasingly atmospheric and experimental territory, while The Dream (2022) incorporated elements of their earlier sound alongside darker and more cinematic songwriting.
These albums showcase alt-J's evolution from their distinctive early indie sound into a more expansive and experimental approach, combining unusual rhythms, layered instrumentation, electronic textures, and evocative songwriting.
