Avatar are a Swedish heavy metal band formed in Gothenburg in 2001. Known for combining heavy guitar riffs, melodic songwriting and theatrical presentation with elements of groove metal, alternative metal and hard rock, the band have developed an increasingly ambitious approach to modern heavy music.
Led by vocalist Johannes Eckerström, Avatar are also renowned for their elaborate live performances, distinctive characters and dark sense of humour. Their music balances aggressive riffs and powerful vocals with memorable melodies, while their visual concepts and storytelling have become an important part of the band's identity.
Avatar began as Lost Soul in 2001, founded by drummer John Alfredsson and vocalist Christian Rimmi. After several early lineup changes, the band adopted the name Avatar, but the members eventually decided to disband because of a lack of interest in continuing to play heavy music.
Alfredsson and guitarist Jonas Jarlsby later reformed the group with vocalist Johannes Eckerström and new members, playing their first show in January 2003. Further lineup changes followed throughout the year, with bassist Simon Andersson joining in October to complete the band's first stable lineup. This new formation provided the foundation for Avatar's subsequent development and growing presence within the Swedish metal scene.
Avatar released their debut album Thoughts of No Tomorrow in 2006, followed by Schlacht in 2007 and Avatar in 2009. Their music gradually became more groove-driven and theatrical, with Black Waltz (2012) marking an important step forward. The band continued to build an international following through extensive touring, with Hail the Apocalypse (2014) helping establish them as a major name in contemporary metal.
